Shonda Rhimes: Life Ruiner

Spoiler Alert: If you are not up-to-date on your Grey’s Anatomy, do not be angered by what you are about to read. You have been warned.

Don't be distracted by this cheerful demeanor.
That red lipstick is actually the remains of
written off characters.
In the ongoing 9 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, one thing is certain. Shonda Rhimes is a life ruiner. She ruins people’s lives. Literally. She straight up ends them. On a weekly basis since I was about 14, Shonda has ripped my heart out, held it in front of me, and made it cry uncontrollably. She toys with her viewers by always keeping us guessing on who will live or die. It's almost a televised version of Russian Roulette (not to be confused with the unpopular game show that aired in 2002). Every single character has been in life-threatening peril. Alex, Derek, and Owen were all shot (in the same story arc); Izzie had cancer that spanned over two seasons; Christina even got stabbed (with an icicle!) because of a 2-part karmic backlash. And of course, each of these characters were shown in a lifeless depiction as the episode ended.

Then of course, we have the shadow of death herself, Meredith Grey. Shonda always gives special attention to the title character to make sure her life is in a constant stage of suckage. I honestly think that Shonda had a middle-school bully named Meredith and this is how she is enacting her revenge. By finding every which-way to emotionally and physically scar this character for all eternity. Drowning her into a purgatory state, almost exploding her with a homemade bomb, taking away her child, and killing her sister, mother, step-mother, and even her dog. That is too far Shonda.

This is not the writing style of someone who wants everyone to ride off into the sunset riding unicorns and holding hands. As for guest stars getting the scalpel-shaped axe, Shonda finds a way for us viewers to get emotionally attached to characters we have only known for 40 minutes before promptly showing that flatline we all have seen too many times. And of course, all of these mortal victims are pleasantly nice people who don't deserve to meet their demise due to an aortic dissection or inoperable brain tumor. With the exceptions of Ellis Grey and that serial killer guy.

With all of this emotional turmoil, it's a real surprise that anyone is left standing. And by anyone, I mean the fans. Personally, I can handle all the twists and turns. But I've been dealing with these kind of shows for years. I do worry about the rest of you though. Comment below if you need to vent your frustrations about Shonda.

  7. I'm amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I encounter a blog that's
both educative and interesting, and without a doubt, you've hit the nail on the head. The problem is something too few folks are speaking intelligently about. Now i'm very happy that I found this
during my hunt for something regarding this.
